FAQ

Registration for both tournaments has now closed.
Before reading the FAQ, we strongly encourage you to review the following pages: Registration Information, Tournament Information, and more details about our tests.

Before Applying

We use a uniformly random lottery.
Team: USD $80 per team;
Individual: USD $10 per individual.
Fees must be paid in cash or check when checking in at the tournament. We do not accept any other forms of payment such as debit/credit cards, online payments, or mailed checks.
Yes. The registration process is the same as domestic students.
Yes. Once the in-person tournament finishes, the online exam is available through Hydrogen. Note that the online exam is unofficial, and no awards or prizes are given for it. No advance registration is necessary for it either.

For Coaches

No. Each organization may be represented only once in our registration system.
  1. Make sure that your students have verified competitor accounts on hmmt.org.
  2. Navigate to the registration workflow, select your organization and the tournament of interest, and click on the Invite tab.
  3. Enter your students’ HMMT usernames (not emails!) to extend invitations for them to join your organization.
  4. Your students can log in at hmmt.org/me and accept the invitation. Once they have joined, your students should appear in the roster management interface.
  5. To add students to a specific team, navigate to the team page and select a student’s name from a dropdown list in the roster management interface.
Note that inviting students to the organization is separate and distinct from adding them to the team roster.
No. You need to re-apply for every tournament in which you intend to compete.
No. You need to re-apply for every tournament in which you intend to compete.
Almost anything, with a few guidelines:
  • Don’t name your organization after a school/other organization, unless you are affiliated with that school/organization (i.e. a teacher, or a math team coach).
  • Please be respectful of others and be appropriate when naming your organization/team. We reserve the right to disqualify or rename participants if their organization/team name is offensive.
No, each individual application is entered into the lottery separately. It’s possible for only some of them to be accepted.

For Students/Parents

Yes, you can apply as an individual competitor. We will help you form a team with other individuals the day of the tournament. Teams of individuals or incomplete teams are ineligible for team prizes and individual applicants cannot participate in a team accepted through a team application.
No. If you belong to a school or club that submits an application for either tournament, you must compete with them if at all.
No, each student may only participate in one tournament each season.
A student must participate through their school if the school submits an application for any tournament in a season. Students whose schools do not apply for HMMT registration should not be eligible for multiple regional organizations. Each student is only eligible through at most one organization for a given season.
No. Any organization claiming to sell seats to sit at our tournaments should be reported to us at request@hmmt.org.
No. We are not affiliated with the admissions offices of any university, and we do not offer admissions advice. Participating in HMMT on its own has no effect on college admissions.

After Applying

We will be sending emails to notify the accepted teams, so please monitor your inbox. You can also check the status of your registration on your team’s application page (or individual registration page if you are an individual).
Typically, lottery results are released 1-2 weeks after the deadline. Occasionally, lottery results may take up 3 weeks to be released.

After Lottery Results Come Out

For team applications: The team coach must add the minimum requirement of 4 (for November) or 6 (for February) students to your team. Teams that fail to populate their roster may have their acceptance be rescinded.
For individual applications: Confirm your acceptance through the same page that you applied.
The coach can add your team to our waitlist. If a spot becomes available, we will email the team coach ASAP. Waitlist acceptances may happen in the month leading up to the tournament; if you are unable to prepare within that timespan to attend the tournament, then the waitlist might not be the best option for you. Regardless, we encourage you to try out our unofficial online exam and to apply for our future tournaments!

For Confirmed Teams

Please see our diagram in Registration Steps.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend English proficiently.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Can not be a current undergraduate student at Harvard or MIT.
We will email information about parking locations closer to the tournament date. Please make sure the team coach submits parking pre-orders before the deadline.
Roster management is only available to teams with accepted applications, and only until two weeks before the tournament. For individuals, the application is tied to the student during the application process and cannot be transferred.
Official tournaments will have rankings and prizes. Unclaimed prizes can be shipped to their recipients, free of charge, anywhere within the United States, its territories, and Canada.

Additional Questions

When you log into your account, there is an option for you to resend the verification email.
The destination organization should issue an invitation to the student. The student will then be able to choose to accept the new invitation. Students are only eligible to join and compete through a single organization. Note that after the lottery is run, a student will no longer be able to switch organizations.
Friday Night Events don’t require additional registration beyond tournament registration. Friday Night Events are open to all competitors of the tournament.
Sunday Education events are open to all students who wish to attend, not just competitors! To sign up for the Education events, create an HMMT account if you don't already have one and complete the waiver by one week before the tournament weekend.
Please direct all requests to request@hmmt.org. Do not attempt to contact individual members of our organizing team directly. We reserve the right to rescind acceptances and implement other measures for inappropriate conduct and behavior.
